How therapeutic peptides entered medicine, markets, and culture — and which molecules are moving through that pipeline now.
Abstract
Peptides are having a moment — but 'peptides' is really several moments happening at once, and they are easy to confuse. Drawing on roughly 32,700 news articles, 18,100 social-media posts, a live research-use-only retail-price corpus, and the public trial and publication registries, this report separates the parts and asks a single question of the evidence: beneath the GLP-1 weight-loss boom that dominates the headlines, is a broader peptide movement genuinely taking hold, and where is it going?
Key findings
- The news and the internet are telling two different stories: about 93% of compound-linked news articles mention a GLP-1 drug, while about 80% of compound-linked social posts name a non-GLP-1 peptide.
- There is a real non-GLP-1 peptide movement — but it lives on social media, not in the newspaper. Compounds like GHK-Cu, BPC-157, TB-500, and MOTS-c draw hundreds of posts each while attracting little mainstream coverage.
- Different peptides took opposite roads to prominence: GLP-1 drugs diffused top-down (trials → business press → public); research peptides diffused bottom-up (fitness and biohacking communities years ahead of any newsroom).
- The commercial market ranks these worlds as equals; the science does not. In the retail market, research peptides sit at the top of a market-strength model beside GLP-1 drugs while carrying a fraction of the clinical evidence.

What this report is
For most of their history, therapeutic peptides were a specialist concern — a class of drugs, a corner of biochemistry, a set of injections that endocrinologists and a few bodybuilders understood and almost nobody else thought about. In the space of a few years that changed completely, driven mostly by two molecules: semaglutide and tirzepatide, the active ingredients in Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound.
But the same wave lifted a second, stranger world into view: a loosely regulated online market in "research" peptides with names like BPC-157, TB-500, and GHK-Cu — sold for laboratory use, but bought and injected by a growing wellness and fitness subculture.

How to read it
This report mixes very different kinds of evidence, and it is written to keep them visible rather than blur them together. Search interest, social attention, media coverage, commercial availability, and clinical proof are five different things — and a compound can rank high on one while scoring near zero on the others. Every chart names its source, its date range, and what the number does and does not mean. Where the data cannot answer a question, the report says so instead of guessing.
The central finding
The picture that emerges is not a single "peptide boom" but a set of overlapping ones moving at different speeds and on different evidence. One is a genuine pharmaceutical revolution with real trials behind it. Another is a fast, largely unproven consumer market running on word of mouth. Keeping them apart is the whole point of this report.
The market, notably, prices attention rather than evidence: BPC-157 is stocked by more online sellers than semaglutide; 5-Amino-1MQ carries hundreds of live listings on a base of just three lifetime publications and zero human trials. The durable value sits elsewhere — with the incretin innovators and the regulated "picks and shovels" around them.
